The Street Children of Kiev, Ukraine

Zhenya (by Sergey Levitsky)

Once I met a girl named Zhenya in a basement.  I recognized her at the very moment I saw her.  Zhenya some time ago had gone to Puhova church.  The girl looked different then other children.  Her clothes and hair were clean, but in a few days her appearance changed.  After talking with Zhenya I found out that she had seen me in Puhova church.  The reason why she had left home was disagreements with her father.  I had to meet with Zhenya’s parents.  I spoke many times with Zhenya.

Some time later Zhenya called me and told me that she went back home.  I called Zhenya very often inviting her to the church.  This spring she came back to Puhova church and started attending Sunday school again.  This summer she is a Sunday school graduate.  I do not know which role I have played in this story, but I believe that God worked through me.

Sasha

I am Sasha.  I live in Kyiv.  I have been going to Puhova church for 3 months already.  My sister Kristina took me there.  She has been going there for a long time.  I have not lived at home for half a year.  I was living in basements when they found me.  My sister Christina asked me to go to church with her and I went and I liked it there a lot and now I go from home.  Our lessons are over for now but I am really looking forward to them starting again.

Julia (by Sergey Levitsky)

Once I was going to an evening service.  A girl named Julia was waiting for me at the church.  The service had started already and all other children were inside.  When Julia saw me approaching to the church she quickly came in and shouted so loud that the whole church heard that “Uncle Sergey” came.  Julia knew that she needed to be quiet in the church, but in this case she did not hide her emotions.

Alena

I am Alena.  I live in the city of Kyiv.  I am going to Puhova church more than a year already.  My sister Julia started to go to the church before I did.  She is 9 years old.  I like to be in the church.  Nobody smokes or drinks alcohol there.  After services we have Bible classes.  Julia sits on the first seat.  We have a holiday at Sunday school now.  Julia and I are looking forward to having classes and Sunday school again.

Christina

I am Christina.  I live in Kyiv I am going to Puhova church a half year already.  Alena brought me to the church and I like to be there.  We study the Bible and speak about God there.  We have a snack after Bible class.  We eat sweets and drink compote.  I like very much at this school and I want to go there.
